Album Description

Unlike most jazz legends Miles Davis came from a privileged background. His grandfather was a landowner in Arkansas and his father a dentist. His mother played the violin and his sister the piano. He had private lessons on the trumpet and wanted for nothing. But the seeds of genius compelled Miles Davis to seek out the roots of what would be his indelible place in the World’s jazz scene. Honing his skills with RnB bands in East St Louis, Davis also sought out Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and the like when they visited town gleaning from them the elements that – combined with that internal flame of musical passion – made Miles Davis a superstar. This collection is quite eclectic, combining pop standards such a s ‘All Of You’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’ with the clearly jazz selection of ‘Round Midnight’ and his own composition ‘So What’. Jazz fans will be thrilled to enjoy a young Herbie Hancock on this album, along with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. It was the post Coltrane Davis at his best, when he was the brightest star in the jazz sky.
