Album Description
In 1960 the American based Unique Records issued an LP that has become a valuable part of jazz history. Actually this small label may have created it but it has lain to one side now for many years and is only now being brought back before a wider audience. Although no one could predict at the time it was the final joint appearance of two jazz titans in tandem......Miles Davis and John Coltrane
Unique records was a small label trying to create a name for itself in the Jazz world with their eclectic recordings of jazz stars of the past and present in live concerts. Sometimes there product was merely good. And in an instance such as this it was lightning in a bottle. Unique in its recording years produced few records but gradually we hope to bring the whole catalogue back so that you can judge for yourselves the work of this unsung label.
On this recording miles Davis and john Coltrane are joined in the Quintet by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, each of whom was a star in his own right. Initially the Quintet had had a rather different make up as Kelly and Cobbhad replaced Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones, but Paul Chambers remained as the bass player throughout.
Many remember Cobb as a drummer extraordinaire as well as a husband and mentor to the wonderful and legendary Dinah Washington in her salad days. After several years with Miles Davis it was Cobb’s relationship with pianist Wynton Kelly that was to endure and they then continued to perform together into the 70s until death took Kelly. In fact the three supporting players in the Quintet often toured themselves as the Wynton Kelly Trio and backed other jazz icons such as Wes Montgomery as well as Miles Davis and the Miles and Coltrane duo.
Songs on this album such as Green Dolphin Street and ‘Round About Midnight are familiar fare to most jazz followers but the panache of the album lies in the sparkling solos taken on by Davis, Coltrane and Kelly. They are something special. There are many CD’s out there on each of these mega artists but there is none which captured them in such a unique (there’s that word again) manner at the absolute zenith of their respective careers.
It follows that collectors of each of these artists have always considered this LP a must for their collections. Until now they have had to settle for the original vinyl issue or stories. Now this CD is brought to you as fresh as the evening it was recorded.
In bringing this CD to you what we didn’t want to do was rush the final process to production. We went back to old methods to treat this unique concert with the reverence it deserves. Instead of a straight transfer to digital followed manufacture , this album was lovingly taken to one of the ‘old’ mastering houses that still exist today in the nooks and crannies of Hollywood. There it was re-mastered on the old tube recorders to enhance the warmth of the music. Only when all the re-mastering was complete was the master moved into the digital domain. The result is the ‘warm’ sounds that you remember, enhanced by the digital clarity.
It’s hard to believe that it has been 40 years since this shooting star that was the Miles and Coltrane Quintet burst across the jazz horizon for such a brief time. Thank goodness we have the recordings to prove just what an experience it must have been for fans and musicians alike. Enjoy.
